I'm excited about this post about others peoples trash turning into my treasure!

I have always wanted a hot chocolate pot. I got that baby for .99 !

The "Davey and Goliath" bobble heads that are on the boys' chest of drawers.

"Robeez" boots for Charlotte at a consignment shop for $6!!!

I think the gravy boat would be great for this years turkey dinner table.

I really liked the vintage look to the doll. Not sure if it's vintage or not but I will pretend that it is. I picked that cutie up at our local Amvets thrift shop for .25. I got home threw her in the wash and found the perfect spot in Charlottes crib.

Lego land

Last week I took the kids to the mall to blow off some steam. We went into a couple toy stores and Lego land. The boys were in lego heaven. They spent about 45 minutes putting together lego dudes. They each got to pick something small as a special treat. Jude got a little lego guy and Henry picked a lego ice tray. I was shocked that he picked an ice tray when he could have picked a toy.

Well, we have been having so much fun with that tray. I had the idea to make chocolates, so we did. They came out so cute. Next time I think we'll do different color chocolate. We also made a bunch of ice for the boys to use in their drinks. I am planning on making crayons out of broken crayons. I believe you can put the tray in the oven. I'll just have to check first.

I absolutely love thrift stores. It's a good way to save money. I am going to start a biweekly post about thrifting and such. I will call it "Trash to Treasure" I will post about things that I get at yard sales, thrift stores, or even the side of the road. I love the idea of repurposing or restyling items that I find. I am currently making some clothes for Charlotte out of my old clothes or clothes that don't fit Charlotte anymore. I also have a couple pieces of furniture that I got that I will be working on as well.

Here are just a couple things that I got recently at the thrift store. I got ALL those items for less than $10!!

I've been trying to eat healthier these days. It's actually been fun searching for healthy recipes via the web and planning my meals throughout the week. I have allowed myself a cheat meal every saturday night so I can still enjoy those not so healthy comfort meals.

I got this recipe from my friend Beth via pinterest. It was so stinking delicious. It was definitely worth the yummy calories that went with it. Jason loved it too!

Almond Coconut Curry Chicken

Last night for dinner I made a chicken dish inspired by this recipe from Whole Living. I didn't have some of the ingredients so I used what I had and it came out awesome. I'm thinking that my recipe might have even been better than the inspiration recipe.

Instead of the Almond milk I used a can of lite coconut milk. I added a 1/4 cup of almonds to a food processor and 2 tablespoons of shredded coconut along with the coconut milk and blitzed away. I used boneless skinless chicken breast instead of thighs cut into chunks and sauted the chicken along with the onions added the milk mixture and the rest of the ingredients that is in the inspiration recipe. I didn't have slivered almonds but I had whole ones that I broke up and sprinkled on top. I served it over rice. It looks like a big pile of poop but it was yummy!

Yup, It's been way too long. I could sit here and write down lots of excuses why I have not blogged in a very long time, but why bother! I'm back baby! I really hope to get my creative juices flowing again.

I'm trying to be healthy and lose weight once again, yup, been too long since I've done that as well.... So, I am going to cook healthy recipes taken from some of my favorite websites, blogs and health magazines and share them with you.

Last night I made Pork Chops with Apples and Thyme. It was absolutely delicious! I forgot to take a picture so I took this one from the recipe.

My last project that was this blanket for my friends baby girl Clara.

I made this cake for my friend Sue's surprise 40th birthday party. The theme was everything eighties. Sue was madly in love with Jack Wagner. She had a weird love for Ziggy, yes, the character Ziggy. she worked at Little Ceasar's Pizza and loved listening the the group "The Bangels. I added a rubix cube, a bottle of aqua net hairspray, Mtv logo, I heart 80's, pacman, and a big 40! The really need to get better working with fondant. It was really humid so it really wasn't fun. I would rather just bake.

I'm no Bob Ross, but not bad for the first try of the artsy thing.

I made this for my friends Janis and Louis who just had a baby girl named Joy.

I made them a meal, and wanted to bring a little gift for Joy, but didn't have extra

money for a gift, so I thought about drawing a picture and painting it with water colors.

I was pretty impressed that I could draw considering I have no drawing skills.

I wanted to keep this for Charlotte. I think I might try to make some cute drawing for the kids bedroom.

Almond Butter

A couple weeks ago I was making a chicken dish and the recipe called for almond butter. I didn't want to go to the store and spend a fortune on almond butter, so I decided to make some since I had almonds in the pantry.

It was really easy, just takes a little patience.

Toast your almonds until lightly fragrant.

Put toasted almonds in food processor, blend until smooth

It takes a good 5 minutes. You'll think it will never

be smooth, but it does happen, I promise.

I uses slivered almonds because that's what I had, but you can

use whole almonds, it will probably take around 10 minutes.

Add a little sea salt to taste, then your done!

YUM!

I am excited about making all kinds of nut butters.....

the possibilities are endless. I'm thinking of a walnut/hazelnut with cinnamon and cardamom.

Pecan with cinnamon and brown sugar, pistachio and sea salt, pumpkin maple and chocolate!

I could go on and on. Anyone have any great combinations that they would want to try?

Double Chocolate Cake

Yesterday I made this unbelievable chocolate cake for my friend Tracy who is expecting a baby boy at the end of the month. We had a small shower for her last night at my small group meeting.

I've been practicing many recipes for cakes that I am making for a wedding in May. This one is definitely a keeper. I made white chocolate butter cream frosting for the layers and a swiss butter cream for the outside of the cake.

I am making 5 different flavor cakes for the wedding. We are making a "dessert" bar instead of a traditional 4-5 tiered wedding cake. I am excited about this project that I have ahead of me.

Up next will be the Lemon cake.

Pizza Party

Sunday night I made pizzas

for something yummy to

eat while watching the

Oscars.

Last week I watched an episode of

"Best thing I ever ate"

on Food network

and they were featuring

favorite pizzas.

I took a couple ideas from

some of the chefs that were

featured.

Instead of a traditional pizza dough

I made a Naan bread dough and grilled

it first.

One of them had thinly sliced

Yukon gold potatoes with a garlic

sauce. The other one had fresh

Parmesan cheese, thinly sliced

red onions and pistachios with

drizzle of olive oil. That one was to

was so unique and very tasty. The other one I made was

diced tomatoes with fresh mozzarella

and basil.

Shower Gift

My good friend is having a baby boy this march, and her mother threw her a small baby shower on saturday. I made these blankets and banner for her baby boy Thomas. It was nice breaking out my sewing machine again. I'm inspired to sew lots of things now. Only if I had time...

My baby boy celebrated

his 4th birthday yesterday

with family.

He wanted a "Transformer"cake,

and this is what he got.

An Autobot symbol.

It was my first time using fondant

which was very challenging

in 90 degrees weather with 100%

humidity. I only made a couple

mistakes.

The cake is a 3 layered marble

and vanilla cake with a

chocolate butter cream.

It was darn good. Not a fan of

the fondant though....

Bacon Shallot and Gouda Souffle.

This is the first attempt on making a souffle and it came out delicious. It could have looked better if I owned and used a traditional souffle dish. But it was scrumptious!

I used a basic souffle recipe for the base and added my own goodness.

The recipe is at the end of this post.

Gather and prep ingredients.

Butter dish then coat with fresh bread crumbs and parm cheese

Melt butter and add flour to make a roux.

Add milk. Combine and bring simmer and stir till it's thick.

Beat egg whites until peaks form.

Add spices and such.

Add egg yokes.

Transfer into bowl, let cool for a few minutes.

Add the rest of the goodness.

Combine whites.

Pour into a souffle bowl, or in my case whatever will work.

Cook until it's nice and brown on the top and puffy.

Scoop that deliciousness onto a plate and enjoy with a couple

slices of a fresh baguette. Yum!!

INGREDIENTS

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus softened butter for brushing
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
1/4 cup fresh toasted bread crumbs
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups milk
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon of a blend of parisian spices
6 slices of bacon
2 sliced shallots
6 large eggs, separated
6 ounces shredded aged Gouda
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 375° and brush 8-cup ramekin with butter. Lightly coat the Parmigiano-Reggiano and bread crumbs and set them on a sturdy baking sheet.
Saute bacon then shallots until caramelized.
In a medium saucepan, melt the 4 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in the flour and cook over moderate heat for 1 minute. Whisk in the milk and cook over moderately low heat until smooth and very thick, about 2 minutes. Stir in the salt and cayenneand parisian spices. Off the heat, whisk in the egg yolks. Let cool slightly. Transfer to a large bowl and stir in the Gouda, bacon and shallots.
In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar at medium-high speed until frothy. Increase the speed to high and beat until firm peaks form. With a rubber spatula, fold the egg whites into the soufflé base until no streaks of white remain.
Spoon the soufflé mixture into the ramekin filling it to 1/2-inch below the rim. Run your thumb inside the rim of each ramekin to help the soufflés rise evenly. Sprinkle the remaining Parmigiano-Reggiano on top and bake in the bottom third of the oven until the soufflés are puffed and golden brown, about 35-40 minutes. Serve immediately.

I got my basic souffle recipe from Food and wine and then made it my own.

Mother's Day Cupcakes

I made these little cuties for mother's day. It was the first time I have ever written with chocolate. Some of the words fell apart because they were to thin. I learned that a wider circle tip is better.

I also made the flowers.

I wish that I could get better pictures.

Hopefully someday we can get a quality camera.

The cupcakes were perfect for the kiddos. I got the recipe from the famous "Magnolia Bakery" in NYC. It was vanilla cake with old fashion buttercream frosting.

I even made the cute little apple blossom flower candies for the decoration. I learned how to make those last week at my Cake decorating class.

This cake was probably the best tasting I have ever had.

If you like lemon you will be a huge fan. I think this recipe would also make amazing cupcakes.

The Rainbow Cake

Henry and I made a rainbow cake a couple weeks ago. It took forever but it was fun. Henry had a blast mixing all the colors into the cake batter.

I am taking a cake decorating class, it's a lot harder than I thought it would be. This was my first attempt before I actually learned how to pipe.

I'll have to remember to take pictures of the cakes I make on a weekly basis.

The cake had 6 layers!! The pictures does no justice to the color. It was vibrant!

Pasta and Chicken with Lemon and Thyme Sauce

I made this last night for dinner and it was yummo.

I came up wit the recipe myself.

1 large shallot finely diced

2 large cloves of garlic smashed and chopped

1 1/2 tablespoon fresh thyme

1/2 cup of sherry

1 cup fat free low sodium chicken broth or stock

1/4 cup of cream or half and half

1/2 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese

zest of a lemon

1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice

Olive oil

butter

flour for dusting (seasoned with spices)

chicken (boneless)

pasta (any type)

For Chicken:

How ever much chicken you want to make is up to you...

*Take chicken and pound flat so it's about and inch or so thick and even.

* In a saute pan add about a tablespoon of olive oil and butter and heat on high. (I like the two mixed, the butter gives it nice flavor)

*while your pan is heating, dust chicken with a seasoned flour (whatever spices you want)

I used salt, lemon pepper, garlic powder and thyme.

*When oil and butter is heated add chicken and lightly brown on both sides. (the chicken should cook pretty fast because it is thin)

*When chicken is done, I put it in my oven on warmer so it stays warm.

For Sauce:

*In a saute pan on medium heat add 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil and tablespoon of butter.

*Saute shallot, garlic, thyme for a few minutes until shallots are translucent.

*Then add sherry and chicken broth, let simmer for a few minutes.

*Then add cream and cheese and let simmer and thicken for a few minutes.

*Lastly add lemon juice and zest.

Boil pasta and drain.

Add most of the sauce to the cooked pasta reserving a little for the chicken.

Drizzle left over sauce on top of chicken.

Hope you try and enjoy it.

Pins and Needles

I was trying to think of something to get my 90+ year old Great Aunt for her birthday........ what do you get for a 90 year old?
She loves to crochet and sew, so I made these holders for her pins and needles. You can't tell by the picture, but the needle holder has to pages of fabric to store the needles in. It's kind of like a book. I also made her a holder for her crochet hooks.
I really like the needle holder... I'm thinking of making a bunch of them and selling them at a craft fair. What do you think?

Grapefruit Goodness

The other day I saw that grapefruits were on sale and I was really craving a refreshing fruit juice. So, I bought some grapefruits, rosemary, and some sparkling water to make this luscious concoction.

First, I squeezed about 6 grapefruits, strained into a canister, then I took a whole pack of rosemary and pounded the steams with the back of my carving knife to release the aromas. Then added the rosemary to the grapefruit. I then put the juice in refrigerator to let steep for a couple hours. In the meantime, I made a quick simple syrup using a 1/4 a cup of pure cane sugar and a 1/4 cup of water, bring to a boil until the sugar dissolves, let cool then add to grapefruit juice.

Finally I filled a glass with ice and poured half the glass with the sparkling water then the rest with the tasty juice. It definitely quenched my craving.

Molten Lava Cake

Last night I made my brother a molten lava cake for his birthday. It was so darn good.

I got the recipe from Paula Deen from the Food Network. The only changes I made was I added Starbucks chocolate liquor instead of the orange liquor and I used a 4 oz ramekin. I cooked the little cakes for about 7 minutes instead of the recommended 12 minutes. If you are a chocolate lover, I highly suggest you make this recipe. You can find her recipe here.

I am so excited! My skirt tutorial was featured today on this sweet blog.

It feels good that someone out there used my tutorial that took me hours to put together! I had no idea any would actually use it.

I got about 150 hits today. I guess I'm going to have to start getting busy and creative! Scary.

Mini French Breakfast Muffins

I know the picture Isn't that great, but these muffins are to die for. Not too sweet but perfect to fulfill your sweet tooth. I got this recipe from THIS blog. I'm going to make more for Jason's Christmas party at work and Christmas Eve.

In the recipe it calls to sprinkle cinnamon sugar when done baking, I did that but also made a sugar glaze that really made them perfect. I think the next time I am going to add lots of lemon to the glaze so it has a lemony flavor. Yeah, good idea.

I advise everyone to try this recipe!!!!!

Been Busy

I know it's been almost a month since I've last posted something. I had the flu, been busy taking care of sick kids, constantly cleaning, shopping for Christmas gifts for the boys, and doing lots of sewing. I've been trying to make gifts for Christmas because money is tight these days. Here is a sneak peak of some gifts i made some sweet girls.

The Girly Twirly Skirt Tutorial

I finally got the guts to post my first tutorial.
The skirt that I made is for size 3T. If you need any measurements for other sizes you can email me, along with any questions and I will try to help you out as much as I can. I apologize ahead of time for the long tutorial. I am visual type of girl and hope you are too! Good luck.

1. Choose your fabric. I chose two heavy cotton fabrics that compliment each other.

2. For the main part of the skirt cut 2 on fold. 21 1/4" wide x 9" high.

3. For the drop waistband cut 1 on fold. 12 1/2" wide x 5 1/2" high.

4. For the hem band cut 2 on fold. 21 1/4" wide x 6" high.

5. With right sides together, sew both sides of your drop waist band together at the edges. Then finish raw edges. I used pinking shears. You can use zigzag stitch or a serger.

6. With right sides together sew both strips of the main skirt together at the edges. Finish raw edge.

7. With right sides together sew both strips of the hem band together at the edges. Finish raw edge.

8. Fold the strip in half all the way around and press it down with an iron to make a firm crease. You should have a large circle when done. (see next photo)

9. It should look like this.

10. This is what all pieces should look like at this point. You should have 3 all together.

11. With right sides together take the hem band and line up the side seams with the side seams of the main skirt and pin all around.

12. Sew the hem band and main skirt together and finish raw edges.

13. Turn the skirt over and press the seam with an iron.

14. Gather the top of main skirt with a gathering or basting stitch. I set my basting stitch on 1. When you start your basting stitch I do a couple of back stitches to secure the thread so it doesn't pull out when you gather it and do not back stitch when your done. Make sure you have enough thread to pull on to gather the fabric. ( I think this is the hardest part)

15. Your gathered skirt should look like this.

16. With the right sides together pin the gathered part of the main skirt to the drop waist band. Make sure the seam of the waist bad in centered in the back with the 2 side seams are even on each side of the main skirt.

17. Sew the pieces together with the gathered side up. Finish raw edges.

18. This is what it should look like at this point.

19. Fold the top of the waist band over about an inch.

20. Pin all the way around the band leaving an opening for the elastic.

21. Sew all the way around the band making sure you leave the opening for the elastic.

22. I sew again around so I have two rows of stitching. I do that so it stays secure.

23. You may want to measure the waist of the child and cut the elastic an inch smaller than their waist. For the size 3t that I am making, the average waist measures about 19-20 inches.
24. Insert a large safety pin into one end of the elastic.

25. Thread the elastic with the safety pin through the opening of the waist band.

26. When it is threaded through, pull both sides of the elastic out of each end of the waistband and overlap each other and lay flat then sew the two together.

27. Push the elastic into the waistband casing, even it out and sew the opening closed.

28. I like to sew a vertical stitch on the center back seam to secure the elastic in place so it doesn't move around and twist.

ALL DONE !!!!

Buffalo Chicken Soup

I got this recipe from my 2008 Better Homes and Gardens Magazine that I had stashed away in my recipe folder. This soup is a must try. It is soooooo darn good. I served it with fresh french bread.

Ingredients
1 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 lb. deli-roasted chicken, skinned, boned, and coarsely shredded
2 Tbsp. butter
1/2 cup coarsely chopped celery
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 14-oz. cans reduced-sodium chicken broth
1-1/2 cups milk
1 tsp. bottled hot pepper sauce
1-1/2 cups mozzarella cheese (6 oz.)
1-1/4 cups crumbled blue cheese (5 oz.)
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese (2 oz.)
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
Bottled hot pepper sauce (optional)

Directions
1. In 4-quart Dutch oven melt butter over medium heat. Add celery and onion; cook and stir until onion is tender. Stir in broth, milk, and the 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce. (I blended all the ingredients together to make it smooth)
2. In bowl toss together mozzarella, 1 cup of the blue cheese, Parmesan, and flour. Add gradually to soup, stirring after each addition just until melted. Stir in three-fourths of the shredded chicken; heat through. Top with remaining chicken, blue cheese, and hot sauce. Makes 6 servings.

Cheesecake Pops

The other day I made the cheesecake pops to take for my MOPS and small group. They were so delicious. I wish I had the time to make them pretty with different sprinkles and such. They were a pain in the butt to make because I didn't have the time for the cheesecake to set overnight after I baked the cake. I should have just spent the $10 and bought one.

It was so hard to make the cake into a ball and stay on a stick so I could dip it in the chocolate.

I think the next time I make them it will be easier. First time is always a learning experience. They are weird looking but darn good.

I also made cake pops that I threw out because they tasted disgusting. Too darn sweet.

Sock Monkey blanket

All week long while taking care of sick boys-- I've been working on this blanket for my friend who is having a baby boy in January. I had to get it done this weekend because she is only in town Sunday and Monday. It was fun trying to figure out how I was going to make a sock monkey out of material. It came out ok. I had a different vision of how it was going to look, but I guess it will have to do.

Countdown to Halloween

A couple weeks ago I wanted to make the boys a countdown to Halloween calender. I got the idea from my sister-in-law Cassandra last year when she emailed me an advent calender from Pottery Barn Kids for Christmas. I looked on the Pottery Barn website to get an idea for the Halloween one and it was over $50! I thought to myself "I could make one of these for much less". I went to the fabric store and bought all the felt I needed to make the calender. I started to cut out the squares and brainstormed how I would make the calender. I was so excited.

A day later I took a trip to "The Christmas Tree Shops" and found an almost identical calender like the one at Pottery Barn for $5.00!!! So I bought it. I figure I would save a lot of time and aggravation. Now I have lots of time to start my Christmas calender!

The Girly Skirt

Back in high school, I took a class for four years called Fashion & Designing. I absolutely loved it. Each year I got better and better at sewing. My senior year of high school (my final project) I had to design and make prom dresses, and then we had to put together a fashion show for the whole school to showcase our work. I wish I had photos of the dresses I made. They were beautiful. I donated them to a couple girls that couldn't afford dresses. It was so much fun. I thought about going to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in NYC, but, went to cosmetology school instead.

Lately, I decided that I wanted to start sewing clothes again using patterns. I haven't done that in about 15 years. So I did. It was refreshing. I made these outfits for some of my friends and families little girls for their birthday. I got the skirt pattern from Pink Fig

The pattern is called the Girly Skirt. The tops were bought at a store and I cut out the the letter out in material and used no sew adhesive to attach the letter or number onto the shirt.

I can't wait to start more cute projects.
